On January 15, 2014, domestic violence became personal to the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, Nu Gamma Omega Chapter, when our beloved sorority sister, Aleria Cyrus Reed, lost her life at the hands of her estranged husband. Her tragic passing opened our eyes to the devastating impact of domestic violence — and we vowed that her death would not be in vain.
From that vow, Aleria’s Promise was born — our chapter’s domestic violence initiative dedicated to raising awareness, providing education, offering direct services, and promoting prevention programs to help end the cycle of abuse.
On Sunday, October 26, 2025, chapter members worshipped together at Second Baptist Church, where we proudly presented two scholarships and a donation to support the church’s outreach efforts on domestic violence. We also had the pleasure of being able to worship with three of Aleria’s line sisters: Kristen Gradney, Tammy Hall, and Melana Lloyd.
Our chapter remains steadfast in the mission to honor Aleria’s legacy by continuing the conversation, uplifting survivors, and keeping our promise.
